About the series
For decades I’ve jotted down phrases and words that catch my attention as I move through the world. I’m most excited by phrases taken out of context that feel freighted with multiple meanings (e.g. “total a car;” “ghost runner;” “fate map”), and while some of these become titles of works, the vast majority just hang out in the back of my sketchbooks in an ever-growing list. The signs held by people in the “Vox populi” (“voice of the people”) series provided a chance to use more of these random snippets. On their own, both the phrases and the context feel familiar; together they feel strange, humorous, and sometimes unsettling. A lot like modern life.
